Your child might not start reading or develop a fondness for reading until they are 6 years old. That’s why it is not a big deal if your 3-year-old does not read, and it is a wise idea to pressure them to start reading. Once your child reaches a stage where they begin to read, you might need to find a systematic program that can teach them how to identify words, their sounds, and other variables. Learning to read is just like breaking a code, which is not at all easy to do.
Every kid must learn to break this code and it makes sense when we see different teachers struggling and helping kids learn to read. Teachers are always there to help kids with their learning as kids cannot learn to read on their own. You can develop your kid’s interest in reading by following some suggestions or steps mentioned below:
Read To Your Child Loudly
You can start teaching your child during your infancy without using flashcards. You can read in front of them, or when you are with them as this can help you spend more time with them. Reading time can be a great bonding activity as it can instill a love for reading with you. Enjoyment, while you are reading, is one of the greatest predictors that your kid is going to enjoy reading in their school age. If your children do not learn from an early age or enjoy reading, then most likely it will hinder their ability to read sometime in the future.
It does not matter how much you or your family reads in front of your kids. You can create a target of reading at least 3 to 4 books per day. You can adapt this pattern even when you are dealing with young kids. When they get older and can sit for longer times, make it a family goal to read books together for atleast 20 minutes in a day.
Make Sure You Have the Appropriate Books for Your Kids
Not all books are suitable for all ages. You must have books that you can learn from or books that they can understand. For instance, if your kid is 1 to 3 years of age, you should read them rhyming books, short story books, and song books. For kids of the age group 3 to 5 years of age, you can get them alphabet Books, picture books, songbooks, or rhyming books
There are so many books that you can find online. Many of these books are popular kids stories and other reading material. Download their eBook version using RCN’s Internet services. You can also think about getting RCN TV that has different entertaining programs for kids as well.
After Reading a Story or Song Ask Them Questions
This is one of the best things to do so that you can complete the entire drill. Once you are done reading with your kids, you can ask them questions. This is not only a great way to encourage kids to learn but also to interact with the book as well. This practice is effective to develop their ability to comprehend what they understood while you were reading.
If your main objective of reading is to get your kid to sound out different words, then you are missing the point. Even kids who can decode words and read fluently might not be able to comprehend whatever they are reading. This applies even when your or someone else is reading out a story or a part of it as well. If a child cannot comprehend whatever he is reading, there is no point in reading and making so much effort.
Ways to Improve Your Kid’s Comprehension
If your kid is a baby, you can ask them if they can see a dog while you are pointing at a dog’s picture. This will help them with adding a new word to their vocabulary and will also encourage them to interact with the book they are reading. After they get older, you can do the same practice and make the sound of the animal that he sees.
Once your kid gets to the age of around 2 to 3 years old, you should ask them questions during, before, and after reading the book. You should show your child the book’s cover and ask them what their thoughts are about the story are. Ask them what they think the story will be about. Ask them what is going to happen in the story. You can even ask them about different characters as well and other aspects of the story.
You Should Read Often Too
You might fascinate your child with the book at an early age, but their habits might deviate if they do not see you or anybody else at the home reading too. If you are an avid reader, you can make a deliberate effort to let your children know and see that you read for at least a few minutes during the day. You can read a cookbook, a novel, a magazine, and even the Bible as well. The basic idea behind this drill is that they should see you read as well.
If you have a son, they should see their fathers read as this might seem to them as if reading is an activity that makes them energetic throughout the day. Make your kid learn by following your example if you want your kid to be successful in life
Classify the Books According to the Genre
Onc your kid gets to the age of around 5, and starts recognizing the difference between reality and fiction, it is a good idea to introduce different genres in reading. This might seem something complicated but it’s something very easy. You can classify your kid’s readings according to the following genre:
- Realistic Fiction
- Reading Books
- Song Books and so on
Kids have a different way of classifying genres. They have to summarize the book in their mind first and recall all the details. They use the information to decide the type of genre that particular book fits into. Then your kid will be able to recall other books that belong to the same genre and connect them with each other. It takes around 5 to 10 seconds after reading a book and a little though the process to classify everything
In the end, one can say that there are so many ways you can help your kid understand the importance of reading. You can help them understand words, and their meanings, and understand and summarize the entire story. You have to be very patient when it comes to kids as they might not be as proficient and understanding at the beginning. Take baby steps and you will achieve success and so will your kid.
